Nenana City School District received a three year Alaska Native Education Grant funded by the US Department of Education. One portion of this grant supports students in obtaining EMT I certification. Qualified students (those who have previously taken ETT courses through Nenana City School District) are able to attend a two week summer session. At the end of the session, successful candidates will have earned EMT I certification, and will be awarded an Emergency Response Kit ($200 value) free of charge.

In the summer of 2007, eighteen students began the full two-week, 80-hour class. seventeen students passed the class and received three college credits from the University of Alaska Interior Aleutians campus. Fourteen students passed the two days of testing at the end, therefore earning their EMT-1 certification (or they will receive their certification on the 18th birthday). The students attending were from Nenana, Kaltag, Kongiganak, Anderson, Circle, Kipnuk, Mountain Village, North Pole, Seward, St. Mary’s, Tanana, and Tyonek.

Here is some participant feedback from 2007:

“I would recommend the 2007 Summer EMT Class. With the skills learned, you can save the life of a friend, a family member or someone in your community.” F.O., Nenana

“The EMT-1 Bridge Class in Nenana was a very challenging course, taking a great amount of dedication. Although it cut our summer vacation short, it was well worth the two week sacrifice. We had the opportunity to learn and practice life-saving techniques.” B.S., Kaltag

“The bridge class for ETT’s to become EMT I’s was fun and exciting, but (more importantly) it taught me the skills I need to be a member of the Nenana Volunteer Fire/EMS Department. The class gave me the medical knowledge and helped me understand how to use all the equipment properly. I feel as though I have been well trained and able to assist people who are injured or in need of medical attention.” D.K., Nenana

EMT was a very grueling experience--training and studying for hours upon hours. But these things shouldn’t turn one away from doing the training. I myself have saved lives with knowledge I gained in this program. I’ve even joined the local fire department here and I get to help save lives on a regular basis. I strongly recommend anyone who is interested in going into any medical field to join this program. You will be about fifty steps ahead of all your classmates both by experience and knowledge. After everything written here, I think that the most rewarding part of this program is the sheer feeling of knowing that I’m now able to help someone or even save someone’s life.” B.K., Nenana

The grant covers all costs, including travel to Nenana, room and board, and class costs. Housing will be at the Nenana Student Living Center and classes will be held at Nenana City Public School.
