Science News
The Physical Science class has been exploring a unit on space. As part of the unit we built and launched our own rockets. The winners of the longest duration of flight awards went to Amanda McPherson and Christina Moore with a 49.84 second flight. Killian Lolnitz finished first runner up with a 46.72 second flight. There were a few mishaps and very short flights but most of the students found success or excitement on the launch pad. The Wildlife class just completed constructing skeletons from the animals that they dissected. Two Pigs, two weasels, a squirrel, a bat, a frog and a Porcupine were all reconstructed and displayed, along with information about the animal, in the library display case. The class will soon be traveling to the Large Animal Research Center at UAF to study Muskox and Caribou. Along with the usual work associated with Chemistry this class is now completing and educational program that will help rural students about air quality issues. The kit is designed for middle school and high school level. As part of the design students traveled to Anchorage to meet with Mensel Nelson, a professor from Northern Arizona University, and a national expert on air quality. He was very impressed with our students and even offered them an intern position at the Northern Arizona to work with him this summer! The Life science (Jr. High) students are studying the human body and are now working on muscle and bone structure. We will see how fast their reflexes are when the test their reaction during a reflex lab. The anatomy class recently returned from a field trip to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. There they spent time in the Cath. Lab, studying mainly heart issues, the Cancer treatment center, focusing on radiation. The students are busy with their Emergency Trauma Technician training and will be taking the State test in a few weeks. |
