May 2008 Newsletter By Mr. Krause (Nenana City School Principal) A Note from Mr. Krause (Nenana Principal) May – 2008
“Why do you have to ruin EVERYTHING?” A Nenana High School student who was mad about one of my decisions yelled this at me. “Its my job”, I told her as she stormed off. “What the heck?” “C’mon Mr. Krause!” “Oh man, you ruined our night!” These were just a few comments I heard from students after I closed their post Music Festival dance down about 30 minutes early. There were several factors that led to closing the dance early. The clincher was a student who threw himself off the stage into a “mosh-pit. In order to successfully ruin “everything” for a teenager there are a lot of things to consider!
One of the first things I considered when “ruining” the student lives in the above situations is how safe they were. Students might not have been safe if I didn’t choose to intervene and be that “mean old bald principal guy”. Parents want their children to have fun, but not at the expense of safety.
Does your child feel safe at home? I remember some times as a kid when I didn’t go home to a house that felt safe. My parents went though some serious partying years and I often felt like an afterthought. Their parties would be going on until all hours of the morning and then would invariably be followed up with a huge argument. They’d scream about divorce and who’d “get custody of Joe”. While that type of thing is often just part of life, it doesn’t make it easy on a kid to concentrate at school. We want Nenana School to be the safest place in town. Kids learn better when they feel safe. Students should feel physically and emotionally safe in our school. It breaks a parents heart to have their child come home having been picked on, hurt, made fun of, or bullied. Nobody should have to put up with treatment like that. If your child isn’t feeling “safe” at Nenana School please let us know.
Well now, this definitely didn’t end up be a typical end of the year “feel good” newsletter submission. Sorry about that! Hey, warm weather and longer days are just around the corner. Most of our students will grow taller over the summer and come back with fun stories about their summer vacation. Here’s hoping your summer is fun, relaxing, and safe!
